Looking at Photographs: 100 Pictures from the Collection of the Museum of Modern Art

Description

'This is a picture book, and its first purpose is to provide the material for simple delectation', wrote curator John Szarkowski in this first survey of The Museum of Modern Art's photography collection. Since 1930, when the Museum accessioned its first photograph, it has assembled an extraordinary and wide-ranging collection of pictures for preservation, study and exhibition. A visually splendid album, Looking at Photographs is both a treasury of remarkable photographs and a lively introduction to the aesthetics and the historical development of photography. This reissue, with new digital duotones, enhances a classic volume and makes it available to a new generation. Some of the photographs are familiar and well-loved favourites; many are surprising, little-known works by the masters of the art, and a number are hitherto unpublished works by unknown photographers of the past. Among the outstanding figures represented here are Hill and Adamson, Julia Margaret Cameron, Timothy O'Sullivan, Eugene Atget, Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen, Paul Strand, EdwardWeston, Andre Kertesz,Walker Evans, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Dorothea Lange, Brassai, Ansel Adams, Shomei Tomatsu, Robert Frank, Diane Arbus and Lee Friedlander.

Zest for Life: The Mediterranean Anti-Cancer Diet

Description

Zest for Life, the first anti-cancer health book with recipes based on the traditional Mediterranean diet (new international edition), provides all the guidance and practical advice you need to prepare delicious, easy and affordable meals to boost your defenses against cancer. Without prevention, one in two men and one in three women in the industrialized world will develop cancer. What many people don't know: at least a third of cancers could be avoided through a healthy diet and lifestyle. Zest for Life does *not* propose a short-term "diet" of hunger or imbalanced eating. On the contrary, it shows how easy it is to enjoy a wide variety of tasty, healthy foods every day and in doing so to reduce not only our cancer risk, but also the risk of heart disease, obesity or diabetes. The Zest for Life diet emphasizes vegetables and fruits, fish, olive oil, legumes, fresh herbs and spices, and highlights the importance of conviviality and the guilt-free enjoyment of food, thus nourishing both body and soul. The healthy, modern recipes are inspired by rich culinary traditions from around the Mediterranean: Italy, France, Spain, Greece, Turkey, Morocco and others. Zest for Life comprises a 120-page science section outlining the principles of anti-cancer eating based on the latest scientific research, followed by 150 easy, family-friendly recipes (using US and UK measurements). Most of the recipes are plant-based, although healthy fish and meat dishes feature too, as do low-sugar, gluten-free cakes and other desserts. Author Conner Middelmann-Whitney, nutritionist, health writer, chef and mother-of-three, overcame early-stage cervical cancer 11 years ago. Pragmatic, not preachy, she shares her personal cancer story in an engaging style and suggests simple, tasty ways in which anti-cancer eating can fit into busy schedules and tight budgets. The book is supported by a website, www.zestforlifediet.com featuring photographs of many of the dishes featured in the book as well as frequently updated cancer-prevention news, healthy eating advice and culinary tips. Conner is donating 25 percent of her royalties (32 pence of every book sold) to Maggie's Cancer Caring Centres, a UK registered charity number SC024414 (http: //www.maggiescentres.org/home.html).

Tristram Hunt: The English Civil War at First Hand

The English Civil War at First Hand

Description

Almost a quarter of a million lives were lost as King and Parliament battled for their religious and political ideals in the English Civil War. England was divided between Cavaliers and Roundheads engaged in bitter struggles from Preston to Lostwithiel, Pembroke to York. Armies were on the march, villages were decimated and great dynasties destroyed: fathers and sons, uncles and cousins were pitted against each other in defence of their loyalties. The civil war led to the execution of a king, the beginnings of sectarian division in Ireland, savage clan warfare in Scotland and the roots of English socialism. Tristram Hunt avoids adding to the many, mostly transitory interpretations of the civil war and instead offers a timeless narrative based on the first-hand accounts of those who witnessed these traumatic events. In doing so he brings out the voices of the civil war generation - those who lost sons, who witnessed massacres and who fought for an ideal. In this book we see their motivations, fears and misery as the horror of war overwhelmed them. From Cromwell's letters to the memoirs of a Roundhead wife the civil war era is brought to life in all its terrible and fascinating glory.

He is Senior Lecturer in Media at Sheffield Hallam University and the author of Media and Nation Building (Berghahn, 2006) and Localizing the Internet (Berghahn, forthcoming). Michael Morpurgo: Running Wild

Running Wild

Description

An epic and heart-rending jungle adventure from the bestselling author of Kaspar and Born to Run. For Will and his mother, going to Indonesia isn't just a holiday. It's an escape, a new start, a chance to put things behind them - things like the death of Will's father. And to begin with, it seems to be just what they both needed. But then Oona, the elephant Will is riding on the beach, begins acting strangely, shying away from the sea. And that's when the tsunami comes crashing in, and Oona begins to run. Except that when the tsunami is gone, Oona just keeps on running. With nothing on his back but a shirt and nothing to sustain him but a bottle of water, Will must learn to survive deep in the jungle. Luckily, though, he's not completely alone...He's got Oona.

Every teenager wants to fit in and be just like everybody else. So imagine how hard that is when your father runs a taxidermy business out of the family home, your mother runs the student cafeteria, and your sister has just been elected high school mascot, which means she walks the halls in a giant bird costume. But Running Wild ebook pdf as Jenny Lawson grows up, falls in love, gets engaged -- in a way that is as disastrous as it is romantic -- and starts a family of her own, she learns that life's most absurd and humiliating moments, the ones we wish we could pretend had never happened, are the very same moments that make us who we are. This is an often poignant, sometimes disturbing, but always hilarious book from a writer that dares to say your deepest and strangest thoughts out loud. Like laughter at a funeral, it is both highly irreverent and impossible to stop once you've started ...

Heartbreak House: A Fantasia in the Russian Manner on English Themes

Description

When Ellie Dunn joins a house-party at the home of the eccentric Captain Shotover, she causes a stir with her decision to marry for money rather than love, and the Captain's forthright daughter Hesione protests vigorously against the pragmatic young woman's choice. Written between 1916 and 1917 as war raged across Europe, Heartbreak House is a telling indictment of the generation responsible for the First World War. With its bold combination of high farce and bitter tragedy, Shaw's play remains an uncannily prophetic depiction of a society on the threshold of an abrupt awakening.

Belinda Gore: The Ecstatic Experience: Healing Postures for Spirit Journeys

The Ecstatic Experience: Healing Postures for Spirit Journeys

Description

The human need for ecstasy--the ability to be free of the limitations of ordinary consciousness--is as imperative as the need for food. Renowned anthropologist Felicitas Goodman claimed that being deprived of ecstasy was the fundamental cause of all forms of addiction. Indigenous cultures and the civilizations of antiquity were aware of this and developed specific rituals to induce and channel trance energies to detoxify and nourish the subtle body in order to experience the ecstatic reality that gives life to matter. The body postures seen in ancient art from Mayan, Egyptian, African, Native American, Sumerian, and other ancient and indigenous traditions are a doorway to inducing this kind of ecstatic trance. People who assume these postures in a ritual context are able to experience expanded and transformative states of consciousness. Following up on the groundbreaking introduction of this practice in her first book, Ecstatic Body Postures, Belinda Gore provides a new series of 20 sacred postures and exercises that allow for a deeper understanding and utilization of these shamanic practices. She shows how to use the energy awakened by these practices for healing, shapeshifting, initiations into the mysteries of death and rebirth, divination, spirit journeying, and restoring balance to the cosmic patterns disrupted by destructive human activity. To help reach these deep, ecstatic trance states, the author also provides a 60-minute CD of shamanic trance rhythms to accompany the journeys.

Don sets about learning the protocols of becoming a father, but his unusual research style gets him into trouble with the law. Fortunately his best friend Gene is on hand to offer advice: he's left Claudia and moved in with Don and Rosie. Knowing how to lead others begins by seeing Jesus as your leader. The Machiavellian Moment is a classic study of the consequences for modern historical and social consciousness of the ideal of the classical republic revived by Machiavelli and other thinkers of Renaissance Italy. J.G.A. Pocock suggests that Machiavelli's prime emphasis was on the moment in which the republic confronts the problem of its own instability in time, and which he calls the "Machiavellian moment." After examining this problem in the thought of Machiavelli, Guicciardini, and Giannotti, Pocock turns to the revival of republican thought in Puritan England and in Revolutionary and Federalist America. He argues that the American Revolution can be considered the last great act of civic humanism of the Renaissance. He relates the The Ecstatic Experience: Healing Postures for Spirit Journeys download ebook pdf origins of modern historicism to the clash between civic, Christian, and commercial values in the thought of the eighteenth century.

Kurt Vonnegut: Novels and Stories 1963-1973

Novels and Stories 1963-1973

Description

Like Mark Twain, Kurt Vonnegut (1922-2007) was a Midwestern everyman steeped in the rhythms of American speech whose anger at the way things are was matched only by his love for the best that we can be. His cunningly relaxed delivery was so original, so finely calibrated, and so profound an articulation of the Sixties' spirit that many critics overlooked the moral seriousness behind the standup-comic craftsmanship. Capturing Vonnegut in pyrotechnic mid-career, this first volume of a projected three-volume edition gathers four of his most acclaimed novels. "Cat's Cradle" (1963) is a comedy of the end of the world (it ends with ice). "God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater" (1965) is the tale of a so-called fool, his money, and the lawyer who contrives to part them (it ends with fire). "Slaughterhouse-Five "(1969), Vonnegut's breakout book and one of the iconic masterpieces of twentieth-century American literature, is the tale of Billy Pilgrim, who, being unstuck in time, is doomed to continually relive both the firebombing of Dresden and his abduction by space aliens. And, in a text enhanced by the author's spirited line drawings, "Breakfast of Champions" (1973) describes the fateful meeting of "two lonesome, skinny, fairly old white men," one of whom disastrously believes that everyone else is a robot. The volume is rounded out with three brilliant short stories and revealing autobiographical accounts of the bombing of Dresden.
